tPA Mechanism of Action

tPA, or tissue plasminogen activator, works by converting plasminogen into plasmin, the enzyme responsible for breaking down fibrin clots. Fibrinolysis and Clot Dissolution

Fibrinolysis is the process through which the body breaks down clots, a crucial step in maintaining vessel patency but potentially harmful during active bleeding. tPA accelerates this process by increasing plasmin activity, thereby dissolving clots that might otherwise help to stem hemorrhage.

Hemorrhage Pathophysiology

In hemorrhagic conditions, the bleeding results from vessel rupture where clot formation is essential to stop the loss of blood. Using tPA in these cases undermines the natural hemostatic process by dissolving clots, potentially worsening the bleeding and leading to further complications.
