The electron dot notation is a way that you can show how many balance electrons a element or compound has.
00:11
And so how you do this is you put dots around the element or x's indicating the number.
00:21
And just for an example, if i had an element, say, a, this would be the first valence electron, the second, the third, and the fourth.
00:36
You start off one on each side and then you go through and add your fifth, six, seventh, and eighth if the element has eight electrons.
00:49
But you first start off only placing one because the electrons want to be as far apart as possible away from each other.
00:57
And so the first example we have is helium and it has two valence electrons.
01:04
So it will have one valence electron here and i'm just going to represent it as a red dot in one here.
01:17
Or in reality, it might even be here because it's further apart...
