Carbonyl Compounds

Carbonyl compounds, including aldehydes and ketones, are organic molecules that feature a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom. They are important intermediates and products in organic synthesis, often formed through the oxidative cleavage of alkenes via ozonolysis.

Dimethyl Sulfide in Reductive Workup

Dimethyl sulfide is employed in the reductive workup phase of ozonolysis to convert ozonide intermediates into stable carbonyl compounds. This step prevents the formation of potentially hazardous peroxides by reducing the reactive intermediates into the desired aldehydes or ketones.

Ozonolysis

Ozonolysis is an organic reaction in which ozone (O3) cleaves the carbon–carbon double bond of an alkene to form a variety of oxygenated products. In its typical course, the alkene reacts with ozone to form an unstable ozonide intermediate, which is then decomposed to yield carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes and ketones.
