we're told that we're pumping up a bicycle tire with a hand pump, the piston of which has a two centimeter radius. Gonna figure out what force of Newtons must exert to create 6.9 times 10 to the fifth Pascal's of pressure in the tire. So I've drawn a little dramatic. Here we have our pump and then it has a related this cross section for the cylinder. We're pushing on the handle and we're creating some pressure here, and we want to figure out what again this forces. So we need to multiply the pressure in the cylinder here. Times the cross sectional area of the cylinder were given radius and pressure. And the force is just the pressure times the area, which is then pressure times pi r squared, plugging in our numbers, we get that the force is 867 Newton's and asked if that is a reasonable amount of force. Well, if you convert that the pounds for us people in the United States, that is £195 which is more than many people way. So even if you were standing on this, you wouldn't be able to generate that much pressure. And the problem is that if you think about it, a bicycle pump usually has a much probably has a diameter of two centimeters instead of radius. This is quite a big so a four centimeter diameter, um, pump is much too large to be creating this type of pressure that we want a pump with a much smaller cylinder here.
