Over spring break, Honesty and her friend Marcos went for a hike on the Prospector’s Trail in the Lost Dutchman State Park. Marcos forgot his hiking boots and had to hike in a flimsy pair of flip flops. On one portion of the trail, Marcos stepped on a rusty nail that went straight through his flip flop. Honesty tried to convince Marcos that he should go to the doctor. However, Marcos refused saying that he would be fine. The following week, Honesty called Marcos to see how he was doing and ask if he wanted to go for another hike. Marcos complained of stiffness in his jaw and neck, cramps in his muscles, and irritability. When Marcos finally went to the doctor, the doctor observed a puncture wound, trismus, arching of the back and muscle spasms. A Gram-positive, anaerobic, endospore-forming bacteria was isolated from his wound. Hint: Read Ch 13 & 19 p. 558-562 (5th ed) or p. 560-563 (6th ed).
