Experiment 1
Procedure
Partner:
Work with a partner. Place a small amount (about ¼" depth, approximately 1 mL) of Liquid A in a
clean, dry, medium-sized test tube and add a similar amount of Liquid B. Shake gently, either side-
to-side or with a spanking motion (tapping the side of the test tube with your fingers), and observe
the results. Are the liquids miscible or immiscible? Feel free to add a bit more of one or the other of
the liquids if this helps to clarify the observation and conclusion. Perform similar testing on the other
possible combinations involving liquids A, B, and C, and record the observations in the table below.

Post-Lab Questions
1. Is it possible to tell which of liquid B or C is denser only from the results of Test #3, in which those
two liquids are mixed? Explain why this is so. (If it is possible to tell which is denser, present
your evidence in a logical sequence that demonstrates how and why.)
2. Is it possible to tell which of liquid B or C is denser by performing only the first two tests above?
Explain why this is so. (If it is possible to tell which is denser, present your evidence in a logical
sequence that demonstrates how and why.)
