A 16 kN force P forming an angle $\alpha$ with the vertical is applied as shown to member
ABC, which is supported by a pin and bracket at C and a steel cable BD forming an
angle $\beta$ with the horizontal. The yield stress of the steel cable is $\sigma_Y = 690$ MPa and
the cross-sectional area of the cable is $A_{\text{cable}} = 80$ mm$^2$.
a. Write a computer program (EXCEL, VB, C++, MATLAB etc.) to construct a
table of the Factor of Safety (FS) of the cable for values of $\alpha = 0^\circ, 30^\circ, 60^\circ$ and
$\beta$ ranging from $0^\circ$ to $90^\circ$, using increments of $2.5^\circ$. Plot the FS vs $\beta$ for each
$\alpha$.
b. Determine the maximum and minimum value of FS for each $\alpha$. Explain the
safety conditions of the member when these two FS are applied in the design,
respectively.
c. What should be the design angle ($\alpha$ and $\beta$) for the safest operation of member
ABC. Explain why.
