1. The iconic heavy metal band, Iron Maiden, undertook a world music-tour in their
customized flight 666 aeroplane, wherein their lead singer, Bruce Dickinson, piloted the
plane across the globe. Some believe that, people develop respiratory infections during
air travel because much of the airplane cabin air is recirculated. Iron Maiden could not
have afforded it, to maintain their concert-schedule, although other airlines claim that
using only fresh air in the cabins is too costly since at an altitude of 30000 feet the
outside conditions are, -50°C (i. e. below zero) and 0.1 bar, so that the air would have to
be compressed and heated before being introduced into the cabin. Assume air as an ideal
gas.
(a)Draw a schematic of this step showing some device doing this transformation in the
plane.
(b) The airplane cabin had a volume of 100 m³ with air at the inflight conditions of 25 °C
and 0.8 bar. What would have been the cost for Iron Maiden, of completely refreshing the
air every minute, if air has a heat capacity of $C_p$ = 30 J/(mol K) and energy costs, Rs. 5
per kW-hr?
