1. This first part refers to static pressure, that is pressure due to being under the weight of an unmoving fluid. Go to the PHET site 'under pressure':
Using the single well tab, as pictured above, and default settings (density of water, with Earth's gravity and atmosphere). Note the pressure meter needle can be moved to the location of interest.
1a. What is the pressure at the bottom of the well in kPa if you fill it with water halfway?
1b. What is the pressure at the bottom of the well in kPa if you fill it with water to the top?
1c. In principle, twice the depth of fluid should yield twice the pressure. That is, your answer to 1b should be 2 times your answer from 12a. Is it? If it isn't, explain the discrepancy below.
(Hint: check out the pressure measurement at the top of the water)
2. Take some time to familiarize yourself with some of the other options in the simulation, thinking how they change what you observe. For example, (a) with honey or gasoline instead of water as the fluid, and (b) with the gravity of Mars or Jupiter instead of Earth's. Provide some brief comments on your observations below
