You travel to the Canadian province of Ontario to study island biogeography theory in a series of natural lakes that differ in size, the presence of large fish, and distance from the single source of their plant and animal species, the Saint Lawrence River (SLR). Lakes far from the SLR have lower colonization rates than lakes close to the SLR. Extinction rates are highest for small lakes containing large fish, slightly lower for large lakes containing large fish, lower still for small lakes with no fish, and lowest for large lakes containing no fish.
