wiki home page-class wiki home page
A
I am making this wiki as open as possible. The goal of this assignment is to create a wiki page that
explores, as thoroughly as you can, any of the following that involve chemistry:
some area of endeavor or research in chemistry, for example, planetary exploration, quantum
computing, nano encapsulation of pharmaceuticals, etc.
some current problem involving chemistry, such as global warming, ozone depletion, water
quality, etc.
some occupation that has a connection to chemistry, such as pharmacist, forensic scientist, paint
manufacturer, candy maker, etc.
An original research proposal (research grant abstract)
For the first choice, you should include a description of the goal of this endeavor, and what social or
economic benefit it will bring. Then describe current advances and the science behind them. finally
conclude with a discussion of how close scientists have come to achieving their goals.
For the second class of topics, you should include a description of how this problem impacts people,
and what factors are causing it. Then discuss what is being done to address the problem and the
science behind the solutions. Finally, conclude with a discussion of the prognosis for solving the
problem, and propose any additional steps that you think should be taken.
For the Third area of inquiry, Discuss the economic or social importance of this occupation. Describe
what a person in this occupation does, and how they use chemistry in their daily work. Finally conclude
with a discussion of the positive and negative aspects of that career path, and evaluate whether or not
you could see yourself doing this sometime in the future.
The fourth option is a special project that can have some real practical results. CHM 2910 "Guided
Undergraduate Research" laboratory class began in Fall 2015. Because of this I have added this last
area to the class wiki project. If a proposal is high quality and practical, it may even become the
subject of research for this class The NIH describes a good research grant abstract as described in the
NIH abstract page of this wiki,
