Organ transplants should not be mandated, however great the need may be, no one should be told they have to be an organ donor. I also do not believe that someone should be denied a transplant because they cannot pay for it, or their insurance will not cover it. It should not be an option to deny life saving care for someone because they cannot pay. I realize a transplant is quite costly, but it is something that should be covered without cost to the patient and if a patient does not have insurance, hospitals should have policies in place to greatly reduce the amount of patient responsibility and should work with patients to make realistic payments for their budget. While there may be programs or charities available to assist with costs, this may not be available for everyone and should have to be something that has to be relied on. I realize this is all easier said than done as that is not how our healthcare system is designed but it does not make it right in my opinion. The other thing that comes to mind is should someone be denied due to their life choices which have destroyed their organs, and honestly, I am not sure how I feel about that. I think they should not have priority over someone who has not purposefully destroyed their organs by the choices they have made but I also do not feel they should be denied care either. The only time age should be taken into consideration is when they are a living donor and a minor. I do not think this is a black and white answer as there are many variables to consider but a minor may not want to be a donor and there may be long term effects that should be considered
