Assignment #1 Learning Stories and Classroom Books

Students will create a teacher-made children's book. This book will highlight a moment, activity, or event that the children have experienced while at the program (Child Care Centre/Family Dayhome). This book is for the children to learn about the children and features the children. In such a form of documentation, this book will provide the children the opportunity to relive experiences and is supportive of early literacy and children's language development. Students will be graded on both the book and a presentation for the instructor. Please write your name on the front page of your book and in the footnote of every page.
Criteria for the Book:
***PRESENTED AS A POWERPOINT or CANVA
- Highlights a moment, activity, or event that the children have experienced while at the program.
- Effectively retells the experience in a way that children can relate to and understand.
- Handmade and creative.
- Demonstrate an understanding of a professional publication:
- Typed neatly in a legible font,
- Proofread for spelling and grammar,
- Photos are clear, colored, and neatly mounted.
- Aesthetically pleasing without excessive decorations.
- Front and Back Cover Authored.
- Laminated/protected - as a class book for your program it must be durable and preserved for repeated use by the children.
- Any sources used are referenced in APA format.
- Developmentally appropriate for the age group it is written for.
- Minimum of 10 pages book, not counting the front, back covers, and Reflective questions, References.
- To be presented in class and uploaded in My Campus by April 10.

Reflective Paper:
After creating the book, the students will read the book to the children. (11th page of your book)
The student will observe and reflect on this reading experience to gain insight into the book's effectiveness and the children's learning. They will then write a one (1) page reflective paper to highlight learning from this assignment.
Reflective questions: Write and answer the questions (refer to chapter text and resources provided in class)
(1) How does your book exemplify good children's literature?
(2) Why is your book developmentally appropriate for the children in your classroom?
(3) When reading to the children, what effective storytelling techniques would you use?
