Observation: Stem Diversity
Stolons. The strawberry plant in Figure 19.12a has a horizonnal aboveground stem called a runner or stolen.
The stolon produces adventitions roots and new shoots at nodes. Label an adventitions root and a new shoot
in Figure 19.12.
List any other plants on display that spread and produce new shoots by sending out stolems.
Rhizomes. An iris has a belowground horizontal stem called a thienme, which functions as a fleshy food
storage organ (Fig. 19.12b) New plants can grore from a single piece of the thizome.
List any other plants on display that have the same belowground horizontal stems (rhizomes) as
the iris.
Tubers. A white potato has a belowground thizome that gives off food storage tubers (Fig. 19.12c). Each
eye is a node that can produce new plants.
List any other types of plants on display whose belowground stems have tubers.
Corms. A gladiolus has a belowground vertical stem called a corm, which functions in food storage and
has thin, papery leaves (Fig. 19.12d).
List any other types of plants on display that have a vertical stem called a corm.
