CASE STUDY 2
A traffic officer was called out to a parking complaint (a parked trailer was blocking the entrance in a residential
area). He could have issued a ticket but knew that that would not solve the matter immediately. He therefore
decided to locate the owner. He located the house of the owner, knocked on the door and politely requested him to
remove the trailer as it was causing an obstruction. Unfortunately, there was a party at the house and subsequently
the owner and his friends were all under the influence of alcohol. They started to first verbally, then physically
abusing the officer (they were spitting and slapping him). Feeling totally humiliated and traumatised, the officer
left the scene and immediately reported the incident to his supervisor. To aggravate matters, his supervisor laughed
at him, disregarded the seriousness of the incident, and offered no support at all.
