I need a reply to this discussion post, please. Chapter 6 of this week's assigned readings brought me another interesting "A Further Look" section. On pg. 180, you can read about how the platypus and the cone snail may be of assistance to people suffering from diabetes. I happen to have type 1, insulin-dependent diabetes, so the information provided was of interest to me. I take synthetic fast-acting and slow-acting insulin to regulate my blood glucose levels daily through injection. The platypus produces a chemical called GLP-1 in the poison barbs on its hind feet. GLP-1 is a chemical that is helpful in increasing insulin naturally, although it degrades too quickly to be useful to a diabetic (Garrett & Hough, 2021). The cone snail produces a fast-acting insulin that has been shown to bind to human insulin receptors, showing promise for future use in diabetes treatment (Garrett & Hough, 2021). This is exciting news, and I am curious to see what kind of improvements this could yield for diabetic treatment.
