Problem 6
A Gallup poll asked taxpayers nationwide how they would rate the job being done by the Internal
Revenue Service (IRS). As a result, 6% responded excellent, 23% good, 29% fair, and 42% poor.
The San Francisco Chronicle asked a random sample of California taxpayers the same question.
As a result, 31 responded excellent, 86 good, 157 fair, and 238 poor.
Use a Chi-Squared test to determine if the nationwide percentages obtained by the Gallup poll fit
the IRS job rating distribution for this sample of California taxpayers. Based on this result, should
the San Francisco Chronicle report that taxpayers in California have a similar or different opinion
of the job being done by the IRS as compared to taxpayers nationwide?
