TRAINING WORKSHOPS (TWs)
CARPENTRY COURSE TEST
Answer All Questions
Duration -90 Minutes
Question 1- Joints \& Material - [25 marks]
As shown below in figure 1, The mirror frame was made using corner halving joints.
Figure 1
a) During the design process various other joints could be considered apart from corner halving joint. Mention and draw clear details of other three joints that can effectively be used to make the mirror frame (upon the choices consider strength of the joints to ensure their long-term effectiveness).
[12 marks]
b) An important part of making any joint is marking out. In tabular form describe three stages in the marking out process used in marking the corner halving joint. The stages must be in the correct order.
[6 marks]
c) At the back of the mirror frame, ply wood was used to cover the mirror for safety. With an aid of a sketch explain how a three layered ply wood is made.
[7 marks]
Question 2-Tools, Machines \& safety- [25 marks]
In reference to figure 1 above, upon production of the frame pieces ready for jointing process, several machines and tools were utilized.
a) In tabular form, outline a sequence of machine operations that should be followed to obtain a frame piece ready for jointing process. State an operation and a machine to be used to perform a respective operation.
[10 marks]
b) State set of tools that can be used to replace machines used in the outlined operations in " \( a \) ".
[10 marks]
c) During production of the mirror frame, the woodworker was exposed to different hazards in the workshop. In tabular form identify any five (5) hazards, their source and how to minimize them.
[5 marks]
Question 3- Wood Seasoning, Defects \& Treatment - [25 marks]
When wood is used as a construction material, whether as a structural support in a building or in woodworking objects, it is usually best to dry it first for woodworking purposes and minimization of defects.
a) Wood moisture can be measured by a moisture meter or oven drying method. Outline procedures to be followed in determination of moisture content by oven drying test.
[10 marks]
b) Timber passes through various stages of moisture loss until final point of seasoning. Explain the entire moisture loss process during seasoning.
[10 marks]
c) Outline five (5) defects that can occur to the timber boards if they are not at an allowable moisture content before storing or use in production.
