Delilah is referred to Dr. Tran, an MI therapist, to help her with her alcohol use disorder.
When Dr. Tran asks Delilah about her goals for treatment, Delilah says "I don't want to be
here. I'm not ready to stop drinking. I have no reason to quit right now, I truly enjoy
drinking". To help encourage change talk in Delilah, how might Dr. Tran respond to Delilah's
comment?
Don't you realize how many problems drinking has caused you? So many of your issues can be solved
if you stop drinking.
Right now you're thinking there's no reason to cut down. What do you think it will take for you to
consider a change in the future?
I have seen many patients with your alcohol problem, and I should warn you that it doesn't end well
if you don't change it.
Right now your level of alcohol intake is far too high. Let's negotiate an amount of drinking that I
think is appropriate for you.
