In 1988, researchers set up a series of 50-meter \times 50-meter enclosures to investigate the
effect of kangaroo rats, Dipodomys sp., on smaller seed-eating rodents, Reithrodontomys
sp. The kangaroo rats and the smaller rodents compete for seeds from dessert grasses. They
both prefer the smaller-seeded varieties of plants, but will not eat the same size of seeds if
they are inhabiting the same area.
