A structure is fixed at the right end (ABC) (see diagram below) and carries a compressive axial
load F of 300 kN. The structure is made of a material with a density of 2000 kg/m³.
(a) Determine the stresses at A (upper comer), B (center), and C (lower comer).
(b) Determine the principal stresses ($\sigma_1$, $\sigma_2$) and the principal orientation ($\theta_p$) at Point D, and
draw an element showing the principal stresses at D.
Hint: You may treat the self-weight as a uniformly distributed load w (kN/m) acting on the
top surface.
