? The strut will consist of two structural-steel angles, placed back-to-back as shown above.
Dimensional properties are listed in Table A-6 of Appendix A in Shigley text (10th edition). The
angle material is carbon steel, SAE 1030 HR, Su = 470 N/mm2, Sy = 260 N/mm2.
? Bolt material will be metric property class 5.8, reference table 8-11 in Shigley text. Four bolts
required, per above.
? Minimum Bolt preload must be high enough to create a friction force equal or above the total
shear load. Assume \(\mu\) = 0.2
? Strut will be attached to plate by welding with an AWS E80XX electrode, using fillet welds. You
will determine the size (base), length, and configuration (location) of welds.
? Design struts for a Sy (yield) safety factor \(n_{Y}\) = 2 and Sut (ultimate) safety factor \(n_{UT}\) = 4
? Plate design is not part of this assignment
Specify the following in your solution, along with the calculations that address the criteria listed
above:
? Bolt size (diameter and pitch)
? Structural angle size
? A sketch of weld configuration
