4. (25 points) A tower, 0.15 m in diameter, is to be used to lower the NH3 concentration in a gas stream from 3.6% to 0.3%. The water is fed at a rate of 14.5 mol/s and the gas is fed counter-currently at a rate of 8 mol/s. The tower operates at 293 K and 1 atm. The overall mass-transfer coefficient, $K_Ya$ is $71 mol/m^3 \cdot s \cdot \Delta Y_{NH_3}$. The equilibrium data at 293 K are as follows (You are encouraged to plot the equilibrium curve in Excel): | $X_A$ (mole $NH_3$/mol $H_2O$) | 0 | 0.0164 | 0.0252 | 0.0349 | 0.0445 | 0.0722 | | :------------------------------- | :----- | :----- | :----- | :----- | :----- | :----- | | $Y_A$ (mole $NH_3$/mol air) | 0 | 0.021 | 0.032 | 0.042 | 0.053 | 0.08 | a. Evaluate the ratio $(\frac{L_s}{G_s})_{actual}$ to $(\frac{L_s}{G_s})_{minimum}$. b. Find the height of the tower. A: $\frac{(\frac{L_s}{G_s})_{actual}}{(\frac{L_s}{G_s})_{min}} = 1.65$, $z = 27.7 m$

In this lab, we will duplicate some of the experiments that earned 1. 1. Thomson a Nobel Prize in 1906 for demonstrating that electrons behave like classical particles with a mass m and a charge e. Our equipment, like his, consists of an evacuated glass bulb and an electron "gun" similar to those used in TV's, computer monitors and other viewing screens. An electron is accelerated through a potential difference $\Delta V$, also called the accelerating voltage. Using conservation of energy, we can relate this voltage to the speed of the electron as it leaves the gun: $\frac{1}{2}mv^2 = e\Delta V$ (Equation 1). The electron then enters a region of magnetic field $B$ that deflects it in a circle. An electron moving perpendicular to a magnetic field will experience a force given by $F=evB$ where $v$ is the electron's velocity and $B$ is the strength of the magnetic field. Combining this with the centripetal acceleration for a particle moving in a circle at constant speed gives us $evB = m\frac{v^2}{r}$ (Equation 2). By combining equations 1 and 2, we can eliminate the velocity and express the charge-to-mass ratio ($e/m$) in terms of more easily measured quantities: accelerating voltage, magnetic field and the radius of the circle in which the charged particles move. The magnetic field will come from two coils placed on either side of the clear glass bulb. They are arranged so that the distance between them is half of their average diameter. With this setup, their magnetic field is given as $B = \frac{8\mu_0 NI}{\sqrt{125} R}$ (Equation 3) where N is the numbers of turns in each coil, I is the current in each coil and R is the average radius of each coil. Prelab Questions 1. Algebraically solve Equation 1 for velocity (Le rearrange the equation to read $v=$ "stuff") 2. Algebraically solve Equation 2 for velocity.
