Here are the questions for this week:
1. This week you read Mickey Spillane's "The Big Switch." Compared to the other Hard-Boiled authors we've read, Spillane usually takes sex and violence to an almost exaggerated level. How is Hammer's secretary Velda described? Are you offended by how she is portrayed? Also, in this story, Spillane's detective, Mike Hammer, straight-up murders someone. Do you think the murder was justified? Explain your answer in detail.
2; This week I provided you with a list of famous similes from Raymond Chandler, who was a master of figurative lannguage. Which one of the similes did you find most intriguing/entertaining. Why?
3. So far you have read two examples of Hard-Boiled detective fiction: Dashiell Hammett's action oriented "They Can Only Hang You Once" and Mickey Spillane's racy and straightforward "The Big Switch." Which one of the two did you like best? Why? Be sure to refer to specifics from the stories you write about.
4. Finally, so far in this class we have focused on the British Golden Age mystery and the American Hardboiled detective mystery. Of the two styles, which one did you in general fiind more enjoyable. Why?
