Post-Lab Question 11
Oliver heated a tungsten cylinder weighing 59.876 g in a hot water bath. While that was heating, he added 42.55 g of distilled water to a
styrofoam cup calorimeter and measured its temperature at 21.7 °C. Oliver then added the hot tungsten to the calorimeter and observed a final
temperature of 24.8 °C. What was the initial temperature, in °C, of the tungsten cylinder?
Hint: Refer to Equation SHM.B and rearrange Equation SHM.C in the SHM Calculations section of your lab manual.
Specific Heat of water is 4.184 $\frac{J}{g \cdot ^\circ C}$
Specific Heat of tungsten is 0.132 $\frac{J}{g \cdot ^\circ C}$
Report your answer to accurate significant figures.
