Metabolic Trapping This is the first step in glycolysis, the pathway that breaks down glucose for energy. Glucose is able to leave or enter the cell by facilitated diffusion. The cell membrane contains GLUT transporters that bind to glucose and transport it across the membrane. Glucose-6-P cannot bind to these transporters. Other intermediates of the glycolytic pathway are also phosphorylated - the ionic nature of the phosphate group makes it impossible for these small compounds to diffuse across the lipid membrane.
