a) Solve the three word problems below using three different solution pathways, including the bar model/tape
diagram method. Clearly label and annotate each pathway. Note: Using bar models in two ways but showing two
different arrangements of the bars is considered one pathway. You must choose from visual, organized table,
trial and error, algebraic, etc).
i) Cezar is 6 times as old as Olive, and Daniel's age is 5/6 the age of Cezar. If their combined ages equal 60, how old
are Cezar, Olive, and Daniel?
ii) The ratio of candy bars, ice cream sandwiches, and popsicles at Judd's birthday party is 2:5:4. If there are 12
popsicles, how many candy bars and how many ice cream sandwiches are at Judd's birthday party?
iii) George and Mike are mixing paints for an art project. George wants to mix 3 cups of red with 5 cups of green.
Mike wants to mix 4 cups of red with 6 cups of green. Amy says both mixtures will look the same because Mike is
just adding 1 cup of each color to George's mixture and adding the same amount to both does not change the
mixture. Do you agree or disagree? Justify.
