Robert, MS, RDN, CNSC is a nutrition support dietitian who has worked in the adult ICU at a large medical center in Chicago, Illinois for over 20 years. While in that position, he completed extensive training in bedside placement of nasogastric/nasoenteric feeding tubes. Annually, the director of the nutrition support team (a physician) conducted a comprehensive assessment of Robert’s knowledge and skill in bedside feeding tube placement. These annual assessments were documented in his employee file, designated him as an expert in nutrition support, and allowed him to receive clinical privileging at the medical center to place bedside feeding tubes under supervision of the director of the nutrition support team.
Robert recently relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina and is interviewing for a nutrition support dietitian position at a local hospital. He would like to continue to be part of the nutrition support team and be able to place bedside nasogastric/nasoenteric feeding tubes. The clinical nutrition manager is uncertain on how to respond to his question of whether or not he will be able to continue performing bedside placements in the facility.
Help Robert and the clinical nutrition manager determine whether bedside placement of nasogastric/nasoenteric tubes is within Robert’s scope of practice.
