Fresh water is to be conveyed by pipeline from the "mainland" to an off-shore island. Specifically. water flow rate will be 50 l/s, island is 300 km from the mainland", average depth of the intervening sea is 400 m (maximum depth 500 m), sea current's largest speed is 80 cm/s (cross-flow to pipeline) On the "mainland" shore, a reservoir could be positioned at an elevated position of 200 m above sea level. The island's average height above the sea level is 6 m.
There are 2 parts.
Part A (12 marks)
Write a report on the GENERAL problem of conveying water in sub-sea pipeline to distant off- shore communities. The report should at least address the following
Background to the problem at hand Issues specific to transporting water over long distance, versus more common, shorter distance Issues specific to sub-sea pipeline Whether pumps would be required or gravity alone is enough Issues relating to pipe materials, pipeline construction, maintenance, sea current, waves, etc. Estimation of costs References
Generally, in addition to qualitative discussion, the more QUANTITATIVE (containing specific values from sample cases) the report is, the better.
Part B (8 marks)
Design a pipeline as per description above; especially specify pipe size and material, whether pumps would be required and if yes, their selections (from well-known manufacturers - your choice) and their locations.
