A rescarcher predicts that young adults who view alcohol-related posts on social media have different drinking behaviors as compared to those who do not view such posts. The researcher gets a sample of 27 young adults who viewed alcohol-related posts in the past day and 35 young adults who did not view such posts in the past day. Each person's level of craving to drink is recorded. The data are as follows: persons who viewed alcohol-related posts \( \mathrm{M}_{1}=20 \) \( \mathrm{SS}_{1}=602 \) \( \mathrm{n}_{1}=27 \) \[ \begin{array}{l} \text { persons who did not view alcohol-related posts } \\ \mathrm{M}_{2}=17 \\ \mathrm{SS}_{2}=682 \\ \mathrm{n}_{2}=35 \end{array} \] a. State the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis in symbols. State what type of test you are going to compute (i.e., one sample t-test, independent samples \( t \)-test, paired samples \( t \)-test). \( \mathrm{Ho}=; \mu 1=\mu 2 \) Ho: There is no difference between the 2 groups considering cravings due to there drinking habits HA:HA: \( \mu^{1 /-\mu 2} \) HA: There is a difference between in cravings due to there drinking habits We will conduct an independent sample t-test b. The alpha level is .05 . Locate the critical region and specify the critical \( t \)-value and degrees of freedom below. c. Compute the sample test statistic using the appropriate formula and specify whether you reject the null hypothesis or fail to reject of null hypothesis. 2. A psychologist uses a treatment method called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help reduce stress among college students. She offered weekly therapy sessions to 25 college students and measured the stress estimate the amount of stress reduction after students receive the CBT treatment Sthes session. The Dow Jones Industrial and S&P 500 are two prevalent stock indexes. They are both based on a sample of the largest companies deemed representative of the whole market, but there are significant differences between the two indexes. The Dow Jones, which is based on the 30 biggest companies, is a traditional index with a long-standing history that predates 1929 and the foundation of the FED. For a company to enter the index, it needs to exceed a market capitalization of roughly $177 billion, but a number of traditional procedures, such as assessing reputation and sustained growth, are also involved in allowing a company into the index. The index is price-weighted, which means companies with a smaller number of expensive shares play a bigger role. This might be a traditional form of calculation, but it’s hardly representative of the market. The S&P index is based on the 500 biggest companies by market capitalization, which means it includes a much larger share of the economy than the Dow Jones. To enter the S&P, a company’s capitalization simply needs to exceed roughly $38 billion. The index is calculated based on market weight, which means that the price of individual shares does not play a role, only the sum of their value. Both indexes are samples of stocks which are meant to be representative of the whole market, but because the S&P is larger and more inclusive, it is clearly more telling. Critically assess how you think the two indexes would perform if only very large companies grew, for example, because of changes in the U.S. tax structure, which would make bigger companies more tax efficient. How would the indexes be representative of the whole market?
