QUESTION 2
McKinney & Co. has sent you to Las Vegas to consult on a project with a large travel agency,
Global Worldwide Vistas. Global has Linux workstations for about 70 employees. The
employees use the workstations to access several types of text-mode reservations systems.
They also use a browser on the Linux systems to review Web sites related to travel and travel
destinations, and to exchange e-mail with clients.
1. Jill, one of the more technically minded travel agents, approaches you with some
requests and recommendations. It seems some of the programs used by the employees
require that certain environment variables be set. Jill has been teaching employees
how to set a variable at the command line before starting the programs in question,
but she would like to have them set automatically so that users don't have to enter
the values each time they start the program.
a) How would you do this?
b) Would it be more difficult or easier if every employee is running the program in question from a
single central Linux server?
