Scenario: James has been offered a unique opportunity. He can fulfill his dreams of becoming a great artist. The only problem is that he has to leave his wife and children behind. The funding that's been offered just isn't enough to take care of them, and frankly, there will be no place for them in the artist's community where he'll be living. James decides that you only live once and takes the opportunity.

James has the ability to be a great artist. This is his first real opportunity, and why is it coming at such a high cost? He should be able to do better. And if he doesn't have that gift, then he would be better off passing on this opportunity anyway. More than that, they should understand his own limitations or trust in his talent and ability to shine through when a better opportunity comes. Obviously, this is not what James had in mind when he got married, and you would imagine his wife didn't either. If they were lucky, maybe they discussed it already. If not, then they should decide together what's best for them and their family. What opportunities are reasonable to expect him to give up? (Jeremy Bentham would not approve). They should discuss the pros and cons harder to make a decision. You know pretty well how it goes when you're not sure which side of the discussion you'll be on, the one leaving or the one being left.
