13. Plutonium chemistry is not unexpected.
a) Predict the reaction products of the following reaction. Identify the Acid, the Base and
their Conjugates.
PuO$_2$(s) + 4 HNO$_3$(aq)
b) Pu$^{4+}$ can be reduced by oxidized Hydroxyl Amine:
2 NH$_3$OH$^{+}$(aq) + 4 Pu$^{4+}$(aq) \longrightarrow 4 Pu$^{3+}$(aq) + N$_2$O(g) + H$_2$O + 6 H$^{+}$(aq)
The reaction is important in the reprocessing of Pu waste. Identify the oxidation in this
reaction.
c) You can't just buy a bottle of NH$_3$OH$^{+}$. What \"salt\" of this cation will you purchase?
Remember, you want it to be soluble in Water.
d) How much of your salt is required per gram of Pu remediated? (The two suppliers I
found, Aka Scientific and Ambinter, do not list a price for the salt. Alas, no questions
on the costs of this remediation method.)
