Feature engineering is very important in machine learning. Often times we will have many features and if we use all of the features for our target variable or if we use all the features in an unsupervised learning problem, we will have long computational times and our results may not be as accurate as we would like. We can use feature engineering to combine features into one or by transforming features so that they have a better relationship with our target. An example of this process can be used with weather statements. When watching a weather report we often hear about the "real feel" which is a combination of many other features such as the wind, temperature, sun exposure and many others. We can combine these in to just one feature that we would call the real feel. If we are using kmeans for feature engineering we would find that many of the features actually have similar components. A cold observation would likely come from a higher latitude, be windy, cloudy, and other aspects that would lower the "real feel".
