Exercise 1 Spring Constant
In this exercise you will measure the spring constant of a spring and use the spring constant to determine the change in spring potential energy for a range of displacements.
Procedure
Part 1: Spring Constant
Gather the supplies necessary to perform the experiment, including the 500 g, 100 g and 50 g hanging masses, the spring, the ruler, measuring tape, tape, and safety goggles.
Attach the spring to a wall hook or use the string to firmly attach the spring to a towel rack, coat rack, or other sturdy hook with a flat surface behind.
