Learning Goal:
To examine the relationship between the phasor voltage and phasor current for resistances, inductances, and capacitances.
Given a circuit with sinusoidal sources, analyzing the steady-state response requires solving differential equations in the time domain. However, by transforming the problem to the frequency domain, phasors allow for solving the resulting algebra resulting equations using algebra.
Using phasors allows us to extend and build on our knowledge of Ohm's law. Note that since the phasor voltage has the units volts and the phasor current has the units amperes, the impedance is expressed in ohms. Using phasors will also introduce the use of complex algebra.
