Question 17 Not yet answered Points out of 1.00 Remove flag If the marginal social cost of pollution exceeds the marginal social benefit, which of the following is true? Select one: a. A Pigouvian subsidy can be implemented to reduce the amount of pollution to the socially optimal level. b. A Pigouvian tax can be implemented to reduce the amount of pollution to the socially optimal level. c. Since polluters don't have to compensate those who bear the costs, polluters will have no incentive to limit the amount of emissions and will pollute until the marginal social benefit of an additional unit of pollution is zero. d. Both B and C.

Question 9 2 points Save Answer The manufacturer of a power tool company needs your help with selecting an appropriate material for tool casings which would minimise the embodied energy per unit volume. Which of the following most correctly summarises the choice given that the dimensions of the casing, including the thickness are fixed? Embodied energy (MJ/m³) 107 Silver W-alloys Ti-alloys Tin Ni-alloys Embodied energy per unit volume 106- Pb-alloys Stainless Cu-alloys PEEK Mg-alloys steels Al-alloys Zn-alloys Low alloy steels 105 Carbon Tungsten carbides Aluminum nitride CFRP GFRP PTFE Silicone Epoxies Silicon carbide Alumina SMC PMMA PET PS PVC Silicon PPE steels Nylons Cast PC ABS Silica glass Paper and cardboard irons Polyester PP Borosilicate PLA glass Soda-lime- glass 104 Polymer foams Plywood Brick- Hardwoods Concrete Softwoods Bamboo 103- Metals Polymers Ceramics Hybrids MA (Link) Glass fibre reinforced polyester (GFRP) has a high embodied energy but this is compensated by its very low density, resulting in a low mass component, and hence lower energy than expected. Cast irons appear to have more embodied energy than many polymers but this is only an artefact of their higher density, and if you exploit their higher modulus and toughness to use less material you might have a saving in energy terms. Acyrlonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) offers a low embodied energy per unit volume compared to most materials, although there are alternative polymers that are better by this metric. ABS would be chosen if it's toughness and ease of mouldability were seen as significant benefits. Alternate ceramic and hybrid materials look attractive but only if you ignore practical issues of production and damage tolerance. Die-cast aluminium is a very good choice. While the embodied energy per volume is higher than some other materials, its high stiffness lets us make the case thinner and use less material. The casting process is suitable for making a complex shape without further processing.
