I believe that this characterization of human nature is correct. The idea that suffering and evil in the world came from our own decisions and actions align with the religious teaching in the christian church. We know that God made us perfect and in his image, and we were made with love. He created Adam and Eve with the intentions of caring for the garden, be fruitful and multiply, and follow God. Adam and Eve introduced sin and evil into the world by disobeying God. He asked them no to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Instead, they let temptation take over and they rebelled against God. Suffering and pain occurs because God allowed us to have free will so that we can decide if loving him and following his ways is truly what we want to do. We see throughout the bible many scenarios where evil things happen as a result of a mans actions. Jealousy, anger, disobedience are all things that Satan put in our heads that can cause us to stray from Gods words. If we didn't have sin in the world, there would be no need for redemption and for God to come back down one day to save us all. He promises to save us all from this earthly life and bring us to an eternal life with him where there is no evil or pain. Unfortunately our actions and sinful nature is what allows to have the opportunity to repent and ask for forgiveness. Altogether, this characterization of human nature being discussed is accurate if you believe that God created us in his image. God is perfect, and does not carry any sin. He also does not want to see us in pain or suffer, but he cannot control what we decide to do. It is up to us individuals to have the morals and ethical responses to make sure that we do not sin or introduce more evil or suffering around us.
