5. The Widget company makes widgets. The $Q_s(P)$ function is called the supply function, it represents the number (or quantity) of widgets the Widget company will make if they set the price of a widget at value $P$ dollars. The $Q_d(P)$ function is called the demand function, it represents the number of widgets that consumers would be willing to buy if a widget cost $P$ dollars. In general as the the price of a widget increases then the demand goes down (consumers will buy less widgets the more expensive they are) and the supply goes up (the Widget company makes more widgets if they can sell each for more). For this problem we will assume that the supply and demand functions are linear and of the form $Q_s(P) = aP + b$ and $Q_d(P) = cP + d$ where $a, b, c$ and $d$ are constants. (a) Explain why $a$ and $d$ should be positive while $b$ and $c$ should be negative. You may assume that the widgets dost something to make and that there is some demand (at the right price) for the widgets. Keep your answers short clear and easy to read, you should write no more than a paragraph. I'm not looking for a deep answer. (b) If $Q_d(P) = -3P + 12$ and $Q_s(P) = 4P - 4$ at what point $(P_0, Q_0)$ do the two functions intersect? (c) If the price $P$ is greater than $P_0$ (the intersection of the supply and demand functions), should the Widget company make more or less widgets to meet the demand? If the price $P$ is greater less than $P_0$, should the Widget company make more or less widgets to meet the demand? Why should the widget company set their process at $P_0$? Keep your answers short clear and easy to read, you should write no more than a paragraph. I'm not looking for a deep answer.

Problem #2 The Kevin McCallister Company sells custom home security systems in the Chicago metropolitan area. The company has identified three major activities that drive the cost of selling security systems: Design, Implementation, and Testing. Actual costs for each of these activities in 2017 and 2018 are as follows: 2017 2018 Project Design per Contract $ 1,000 $ 900 Hourly Rate - Installation $ 30 $ 27 Hourly Rate - Testing $ 40 $ 36 After experiencing high costs in 2017, TKMC used value engineering to reduce the cost of selling home security systems. Managers at TKMC want to evaluate whether value engineering has succeeded in reducing the selling cost per sale by the targeted 10% in 2018. Sales of Home Security Systems Total Hours - Installation Total Hours - Testing REQUIRED: 2017 2018 150 175 100 140 75 130 1. Calculate the cost per system in 2017. 2. Calculate the cost per system in 2018. 3. Calculate The Kevin McCallister Company's target cost per sale in 2018. Did they achieve the target in 2018? Explain.

Problem 2 Starting from Gauss' law in differential form, i.e., $\nabla \cdot \vec{e} = \frac{\rho}{\epsilon_0}$, and without using the associated integral form, determine the electric field $\vec{e}$ at an arbitrary point of a static volume charge density $\rho$, $\rho = \frac{6}{a [1 + (R/a)^3]^3} \text{ C/m}^3$, located in free space. The radius $a$, which is a constant, controls the charge concentration.
