A lightweight spring cannon is mounted on the top of an air track glider. The cannon points in the horizontal direction parallel to the air track and is spring-loaded with a plastic ball. We take the spring cannon, the ball, and glider as our system. The system is initially at rest, and the ball is launched via remote control. If we assume that we can neglect any friction between the glider and the air track, and we ignore any internal frictional losses, then under these conditions it is reasonable to assume that the momentum of the system is conserved over the short time it takes the ball to exit the cannon, but before it hits the track.
