Think James Mitchell may have been a qualified psychologist, but his reasoning for his actions was emotional, not based solely on his expertise. His close friend was kidnapped and murdered, and 9/11 was a life-altering event. Instead of retiring, he dedicated himself to legally mastering torture and used his psychological expertise to guide him, which is unethical. Integration is necessary to gain information, but torture is when the line is crossed. The 1st TED talk mentioned how torture is not an effective means to obtain information because, under duress, anything will be said to make the torture stop, including lies. The information provided can't always be easily verified. The 2nd TED talk reminded me of that saying you catch more bees with honey.
