Question I (20 pnts.): Identify the metal\\
XRD
In an XRD experiment reported by Krishnamurthy et al. (Nano Res Lett 9, 627 (2014)), the spectrum in the figure
was observed. The X-Ray source used in the experiment was Cu K$\alpha$ radiation, which has a wavelength of $\lambda$ = 1.54$\AA$.
(a) Is this structure likely to be BCC or FCC? To determine this, calculate the allowed Bragg reflections for both
systems (10 points).
(b) Assuming that there is a single atom in the basis, determine the distance between consecutive [111] and [200]
planes (5 points).
(c) Calculate the lattice constant (i.e. the side length of the conventional cubic lattice) from both of the interplanar
distances calculated in part(b) and identify which metal this XRD profile corresponds to. (Spoiler! It's Au.)
(5 points).
