B. Each example in this exercise is a dilemma, an enumeration argument, or an
argument from direction. Identify the type of argument advanced in each of the
following.
1. Giving loans to Third World countries leaves them with a crippling debt that
they can never pay off. The effort to pay off interest on the debt leads to further
borrowing and deeper debt. The lending nations are left with bad debts. Their
economies suffer as a result. Thus, it would be better not to make loans to Third
World countries.
2. A nation's value system can be derived from one of three sources: a common
religion, a general culture, or a unifying statement of citizen rights. The United
States has not had a common religion for a long time and we no longer can
claim to have a culture common to most of our citizens. Thus, the Constitution
remains our only source for common, unifying values.
3. It is not abortion itself that I oppose but, rather, the principle it introduces.
It legitimizes the notion that a society can terminate unwanted human life.
This principle, once accepted, can be extended and applied to a wide variety
of potentially \"unwanted\" human life. The aged, the terminally ill, the
handicapped\u2014in another time, perhaps even members of a despised race
or religious faith\u2014all these people are at risk.
