Q3: (20 marks) Push Button Mixer 1 Mixer 2 Fig. 3 S1 S2 Fig. 3 shows an industrial mixer whose operation can be explained is as follows: • An operator loads the container (refer Fig. 3) with a liquid that needs to be mixed to make it of homogeneous viscosity. PLC ladder logic does not have to implement this step. This point is mentioned in order to give context to the remaining points. • After loading the container, the operator presses a push button. • When the push button is pressed, one of the two mixers starts mixing. This mixer mixes for 5 minutes after which it switches OFF and the other mixer starts. Then this mixer mixes for 5 minutes after which it switches OFF and the previous mixer starts. This cycle continues. Alternating the mixers is done to prevent overheating the mixers. • There are two viscosity sensors S1 and S2 (shown in bottom-left and top-right of the container in Fig. 3). These sensors become ON only when the viscosity of the liquid around it is within a specific bound (an upper and a lower bound). Once both S1 and S2 are ON it implies that viscosity of the liquid throughout the container is uniform and hence the mixing process is immediately stopped. • After that, the operator removes the mixed liquid from the container. PLC ladder logic does not have to implement this step. This point is mentioned in order to give context to the remaining points. Design a PLC ladder logic diagram that implements the operation mentioned above. Your answer must contain: a. The PLC ladder logic diagram. b. The definitions of the variables in the PLC ladder logic diagram. c. A short explanation of the ladder logic diagram in bulleted points.

A company purchased a piece of equipment costing $125,000 and is depreciating it assuming a 10-year life. The residual value was originally expected to be $10,000. At the end of the fifth year, the motor was replaced (a major overhaul) at a cost of $40,000. The overhaul increased the efficiency of the equipment. How much is depreciation expense in the sixth year assuming straight-line depreciation, no change in estimated useful life and no change in residual value? ? 19,500 ? 21,500 None of the above. ? 18,500 ? 11,500
