16.2 Solving Linear Equations 2 0i3e we have learned how to solve basic linear equations, we can move on to new ones that require more than one step to solve them. The first of these types is where we have an unknown variable term on one side of the equals sign, like in this example; 4x + 1 = 9. We know that once we have '4x = a number', we can solve for x. Therefore, we must remove the +1 from the right-hand side of the equation:
