Introduction
The tribes are groups of people who have a distinct culture of their own and follow their own customs and beliefs.
There are a number of tribal groups (adivasis) spread all over India. They mostly live in remote locations, isolated from mainstream society. People belonging to the same tribe share common ties of kinship. These tribes do not have any sharp social divisions as laid down by the Brahmins and followed by the common
people. But, this does not mean that there are no social and economic differences among the tribals.
The tribes living in different parts of the country are involved in a number of activities such as hunting and gathering, herding and rearing, shifting cultivation, and settled cultivation. Let us study about different tribal societies, their way of living, and their condition during the British rule.
