Section 2: Free-Response Question
Write your answer to each part clearly. Support your answers
with relevant information and examples. Where calculations
are required, show your work.
The following reaction illustrates the breakdown of a sucrose
into two other sugar molecules. The two sugars produced
are commonly found in fruits, honey, and other sweet foods.
When consumed and digested, they provide energy and
sometimes contribute to fat production in humans.
$$C_{12}H_{22}O_{11} + H_2O \longrightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6 + C_6H_{12}O_6$$
Sucrose + Water $\longrightarrow$ Glucose + Fructose
(a) Identify the type of reaction this equation represents.
(b) Describe what is happening in this reaction.
(c) Explain why sucrose must be broken down for humans
to use it.
(d) Describe the type of reaction that occurs when glucose
and fructose are joined to form sucrose. What is the role
of this type of reaction?
