Problem 4
Purpose: When it comes to the chemical reactivity of amines, their ability to act as bases or their nucleophilicity is typically what is most important. However, amines can undergo other types of chemical reactions including transforming into reactive diazonium salts. In this problem, you will determine what diazonium salt is created from an amine and how that diazonium salt allows for the subsequent chemical reactions.
Presentation Instructions: A group will collectively present this question and Problem 1.
Problem: The amine below is subjected to the provided reaction conditions. This creates a diazonium salt which then turns into the shown carbocation intermediate without stereochemistry shown.
$NaNO_2$
$HCl$
a) Draw the structure of the diazonium salt intermediate.
b) Draw the mechanism for the transformation of the diazonium salt intermediate into the carbocation intermediate.
