rewrite: A firm acting out of self-interest will eventually help consumers, even if it does not care about them. This is because when the competition is open in the market, each firm will try to maximize its profits and act in self interest to gain more market share. This is done by providing lucrative prices and more options to the consumers. This will ultimately end up benefitting the consumers. A firm acting in self interest might be harmful to society. This is clealy visible in the wave of materialistic thinking which the consumers have become addicted to. People are buying just because they can now afford the cheap stuff. But more of shopping is not benefitting consumers in any way and having an adverse effect on the environment. The relationship between self interest and social interest is that the self interest motivates people to work, motivate firms to produce for profit maximization. This in turn works out in the favour of social interest as the production and consumption activities fuel the economy. However, the conflict may arise between social and self interest. For example, if the consumers are consuming more of a good which they prefer individually for the sake of self interest, but the production of that good is so harmful to the environment that it is not good for the social interest. In this case, the conflict may arise. People may or may not make rational decisions. People are sometimes bounded to make rational decision due to constraints such as financial constraints, time constraints etc. However, people will make irrational decisions if they know they can afford the consequences of their bad decision making. For example, consumers might not always cosume rationally. They may even consume things they dont need or prefer simply because they are able to afford it. Self-interest is when individuals make decisions that are in their own best interest. Like when you decide to get up in the morning to go to work and make money, or when you pay the grocery store for food that you would like to eat. Social interest is when choices are made that benefit society as a whole. Imagine one person, who is all knowing and really cares about the people. Every action this benevolent dictator made would be in the social interest of the society. The cool thing about social interest is that it can also be attained by individual decision makers acting in their own self-interest. This process is what Adam smith called the invisible hand.
