1. In "Principlism and Its Alleged Competitors," Beauchamp argues that all three competitors are actually
compatible with, or even complement, Principlism. Outline each theory, then argue whether
Beauchamp is correct in his assessment of the place of Principlism compared to rival theories. How
does Beever and Brightman's notion of 'Reflexive Principlism' fit with the other theories?
2. Jodie, an engineering consultant, has been employed to produce an environmental impact statement for
a new road tunnel on behalf of the construction company proposing the tunnel. The client makes clear to
Jodie that they expect the statement will not find significant environmental problems with the project.
However, Jodie is concerned that producing a report that meets these expectations will not fully represent
the adverse effects of the project and could lead to the project proceeding even though its benefits do not
outweigh the environmental damage it will cause. How should Jodie go about completing the
environmental impact statement? Should Jodie aim to meet the client's expectations, adapting the
methodology to get the desired results; warn them that the report may highlight problems; or
simply produce the most honest, accurate report possible? Now, suppose that the client tells Jodie
that she will be employed to produce a series of other environmental impacts statements, but only if
the current statement turns out as the client wishes. Does that change your answers to the previous
questions? Why? Refer to at least two readings or class assignments (Vlog post, in class assignment,
or anything we've done for class) in your answers. (Case adapted from the Royal Academy of
Engineering 2011).
